Word Problem Challenge. Solve each word problem and show your work. 

1.)   Mr.Terpin divides a number by 10 and has a remainder of 3.  If Mr. Terpin first  multiplies the number by 3 and then divides by 10 the remainder would be _________.
 
2.) The scale on a map shows that  1 1/2 " = 15 miles.  A national park on the map is respected by a rectangle 3" x 6".   The national park has an actual area of __________square miles.
 
3.)  If 3/4 of a job can be done in 12 days, then working at the same rate, the entire job takes _________days.
 
4.)  Three apples and two pears cost $.63.  Two apples and three pears cost $.67.  How much does an apple cost?________.
 
5.)  The following is a famous sequence of numbers called the Fibonacci sequence: 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,_,_,_.  It continues indefinitely.  Each number is called a term.  The 1st term is 1, the 2nd term is 1, the 3rd term is 2, the 4th term is 3, the 7th term is 13,etc.  After the 1st two terms, each following term is found by adding the two terms immediately before it.  (34 was found by adding 13 and 21).  Some terms are odd numbers and some terms are even numbers.  The 3rd term,2, is even and the 4th term, is odd.  Of the 45th, 46th,47th terms, which one is even?____________.

    a ^ b means (a x b) /  (a - b) .  For example: 10 ^ 8 = (10 x 8) / (10 - 8) = 80/2 = 40.  Express 9 ^ 6 in simplest form.   ____________
 
 

 

1.)Mr. Thompson has a number of 4 foot poles.  If he lays all the 4 ft. poles in a line, they have the same total length as laying all the 6 ft. poles in a line.  Altogether he has 20 poles.  How many 6ft. poles does he have?

2.)  A 1.5% acid solution is mixed with a 4% acid solution.  How many ounces of each solution are needed to obtain 60 ounces of a 2.5% acid solution?

3.) Two clocks are set at 6 A.M.  One clock gains 30 seconds every hour and the second clock loses 1 minute every hour.  At what time will the faster clock be 30 minutes ahead of the second clock?

4.) In a foreign country the coins are called parns, arns and darns.  Four parns and 1 arn  equal 1 darn.  Two arns and 1 darn equal 10 parns.  How many parns equal 1 darn?

5.)  Rob cleans yards on Saturdays.  One Saturday morning he started with $5 dollars in his pocket.  He cleaned three yards charging the same for each.  He ended with $23 in his pocket.  How much money did Rob have in his pocket after he cleaned the first yard?
